In addition to being the hero of a dog rescued from a burning building, this firefighter becomes his best friend

An American firefighter saved a dog’s life twice. First by getting him out of a burning building, then by becoming his new owner and best friend, thus saving him from being euthanized.

Upon learning that his dog’s health had been greatly affected by a fire and that he would need expensive care, his family had asked that he be euthanized.

For the firefighter who had rescued him, it was out of the question to do so. He decided to become her new dad, as reported by People.

It all started in September 2021. A fire then broke out in an apartment in Des Moines, Iowa. Malcolm Cortner was among the firefighters responding to the blaze.

Upon entering the building, he and his colleagues discovered a 16-month-old Mastiff unconscious from the toxic smoke he had inhaled.

Without wasting a moment, the firefighter took him outside the building and entrusted him to his counterparts, who gave the quadruped oxygen. This allowed the animal to regain its senses, but it was not yet out of danger.

Upon examining him, the city’s Animal Control Department veterinarian found significant lesions on the Mastiff. He informed his then masters and explained that to save him, he had to receive expensive treatment. Otherwise, he would be euthanized.

They had chosen the 2nd option. Malcolm Cortner, however, disagreed. He offered to adopt the dog and pay for his treatment. His request was accepted and the canine, which he called George, was able to be treated.

Today, George is doing wonderfully and has a new home, as well as a new family who loves him, that of the man who saved his life.
