Grateful dog finds home after passing 2,381 days in shelter

Higgins has seen more than 6 adoptive families, but none chose him. He waited patiently at the shelter for 2,381 days, hoping that one day someone would take an interest in him. Leslie Renner, director of the Humane Society of Preble County, has not given up.

She was determined to find him a home because she knew he deserved it. When Higgins was just a puppy, he was brought to the shelter and soon adopted by a family. But a year later, he returned to the shelter as a homeless dog.

After 2,381 days, no one picked him up from the shelter. At the time, he was a year old, and people weren’t interested in adopting him, they wanted puppies instead.

His worried gaze caused people to ignore him sometimes and move on to the next dog. When day 2381 arrived, 22-year-old Brendon Reed showed up at the shelter saying, “I’m here to take Higgins home. ” Staff were shocked when the kindhearted young man said he had secured his first accommodation and wanted a furry friend.

When Reed saw Higgins’ muzzle on social media, he decided to be the one to save him from his lonely cage.

Higgins was delighted to be out of the shelter, to be free. Now he’s a spoiled dog who sleeps on the couch and has his own backyard to run free, after more than six years of confinement.

We are so happy for Higgins and Reed for the special bond they share. Thanks, Reed, for saving him.
